this composite - fully biobased waste-based - demonstrates the new suitable application for the armrest of Ahrends Well chair. We can proudly present the leather left over composite as a result of the materials research project ProPHBV.

The next generation composite material is made from leather scraps, a result of the processing of industrial leather, with a 40% waste of total production. We salvage this material, take care of it and, turn it into a new raw material through a perfect combination with the biomaterial phb, processed by microbes that convert waste water via biotechnology into bioplastic.
We present LC3, a sturdy, reusable, future-proof biomaterial that can be used in a circular manner in interior accessories, furniture and much more.
LC3 is developed by collaborative partners Material Sense LAB, AMS Institute, Ahrend, TU Delft, NPSP, Paques Biomaterials and supported by RVO.
Properties & Benefits
The mechanical properties are comparable to polypropylene (PP)
Opportunities for circular designs and systems and for upcoming regulations (such as EPR) have been substansiated by Life Cycle Analyses
The quality of leather served as an example for developing the composite with a comparable high-quality haptic quality and appearance.
Only organically tanned and chrome-free tanned leather was used for this series of samples – a prerequisite for making the end material fully biodegradable.
Applications & Collaboration After years of development and testing with our team of experts, we are now looking for partners to further develop LC3 for future circular applications. Does this “next generation” material fits your circular strategy and are you interested in joint development for the future?
